At this time of the year I am often pulled away from business and leisure reading, and I’m drawn to religious readings. Maybe you are, too. Killing two birds with one stone, I’ve been rereading a personal favorite from C.S. Lewis — Mere Christianity. Why not join me?
Mere Christianity is a powerful classic by one of the most important Christian writers of the 20th Century—no scratch that—of all time. First published as a series of lectures that aired on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in the 1940s. Lewis was given the opportunity to reach millions by just doing what he did best — teaching. He was a world-renowned academic, lecturer, novelist and Christian apologist.
In the book, Lewis uses everyday language to discuss God, faith and the reasonableness of belief.
In the first chapter of Book 1, Lewis outlines three basic Christian belief systems. He explains how religions were distilled to their basics. And by basics, he means what could appeal to the “mere Christian”— meaning, those believing in a (1) divine source of creation and power, (2) a moral code known as the “Law of Nature” and (3) a Divine Redeemer of mankind.
Lewis encourages us to consider Catholicism, Protestantism, Buddhism, Judaism and other religious beliefs in order to see God’s truth. Some might say Lewis “played the field” when it comes to religion — gathering ideas and insights from the great variety of beliefs. He explains that Christians should recognize the truth even if it has been discovered by those outside of Christianity.
Many of its readers are surprised to find that Lewis was a theist and not a Christian when he began to write Mere Christianity. He had a deep conviction about the fundamental elements of Christianity, and he was eager to share his knowledge with others.
So take a break from the frenzy and find some pleasure in a spiritual journey. Follow along as I delve into Lewis’ Mere Christianity to explore a faith that has, for many believers, been a source of comfort and sustenance for thousands of years.
