No problem: it is a very simple procedure, even for those who, a bit like you, do not really consider themselves experts in the field of new technologies and today we will see together how to execute it.
I anticipate that there are two different methods to update iPad software: the first involves exploiting OTA updates (Over The Air acronym) to update the tablet directly, without connecting it to the Pc and downloading only the files from the Update required. The second, instead, involves the use of the program iTunes and the connection of the iPad to the PC, and in this case the full version of iOS is downloaded to be installed on the device (therefore, the procedure takes more time). You want to know more? Well then let's not waste any more time and find out right away how to update iPad in the way that best suits your needs.
Ah, just one last thing: before moving on to the real action, there are some preliminary operations that, in my humble opinion, you would do well to put in practice to avoid various complications (prudence, you know, it is never too much!). I mean mainly the Backup of your data. To delve into the subject, read on. In the end, I am sure, you will be able to tell him very satisfied and satisfied with what you have learned and the results obtained.
Preliminary operations
As anticipated at the beginning of the guide, before getting to the heart of the matter and update iPad there are some preliminary operations you would do well to do to avoid encountering annoying "headaches" in case something unfortunately goes wrong in the upgrade phase.
In this case, what I ask you to do in advance is to carry out a reserve of your data, save photos and videos present in the memory of the tablet on the PC and update iTunes to the latest available version (if you want to act as a PC). You will find everything explained in detail below.
- Make a backup of iPad on your PC - connect your iPad to the PC with the corresponding cable and wait for the opening of iTunes or, if it does not open automatically, start it "manually" (above MacOS iTunes is included "standard", while in windows you have to download and install it, as I explained in my guide on the subject). Later, if it is the first time you connect the iPad to your PC, authorize the operation by clicking the button allow both on PC and Mac as on the tablet (in this second case, you must also write el unlock code device), then click the iPad icon in the upper left of the program window that meanwhile appeared on the screen and click the button Backup now. If you want to avoid including health and home automation data in the backup, also check the option Local Backup Encoding and choose one password to protect everything For more details, you can refer to my specific guide on how to backup iPad.
- Back up iPad to iCloud - take your tablet, unlock it, go to the home screen and press the icon adjustments (the one with the symbol of the gear ). Then touch your name (top left), then on the item iCloud, select the option ICloud backup and make sure the switch next to the item is on EN (otherwise you provide). If you are using one older version of iOS instead you have to enter Settings > iCloud > Backup. Then, in all cases, press the button Back off now. - Save photos and videos on your PC - connect the iPad to your PC using the appropriate button cable and access the photos on the device using the app photo en MacOS (is pre-installed) or File Browser en windows, after selecting the tablet from the list of connected devices. - Update iTunes to the latest available version - if you are using MacOS, you can do it by going to the section Software update de System preferences And, if you're notified of an update available for iTunes, download and install it immediately by pressing the appropriate button. If, on the other hand, you are using windowsopen the software Apple software update and check the availability of any updates from there. How to update iPad through OTA
After completing the preliminary steps mentioned above, I would say that we can finally get to the heart of the matter and therefore go find out how to update the iPad. First of all, let's see how to carry out this operation in a simpler way, that is, directly from the tablet, that is, through OTA.
The first step you should take is to take the device, unlock it, access the home screen and press the icon adjustments (the one who has gear ).
On the screen that now appears, select the item general from the sidebar and press the redaction Software update placed on the right. In the event that a new version of the iPad operating system is available, you will see a message appear warning you of the situation (on the right side of the screen) and showing you all the updates of the update.
To download the latter, simply press Download and install and write the unlock code from your iPad. You will then need to touch the item. I agree (to accept the terms of use of iOS) and in that Following.
At the end of the download, which can take up to several tens of minutes (depending on the size of the update and the speed of your connection), you must confirm the willingness to install the update by pressing the button Install Now. The device will shut down and thus install the latest version of iOS by overwriting the current version.
If, on the other hand, you want to postpone the installation of the update at another time, touch the button después and, according to your preferences and needs, choose the option Install tonight or that Remind me later. If you choose to install the update overnight, remember to charge your iPad before going to sleep, because during the night, in fact, the tablet will automatically update itself.
When updating your iPad in OTA mode, also pay attention to the percentage of battery available. If you have less than 50% battery at your disposal, charge the tablet and continue the update by keeping the device connected to the power outlet.
Consider then that to continue downloading the update in this way, you need to have it on the iPad free space Enough (the weight of the update is shown on the update download screen). I also point out that from iOS 12 A special function has been introduced that allows you to download the available updates in a way automatic. To enable it, go to Settings> General> Software update> Automatic updates and take it out EN Relative change.
Once the feature is enabled, downloaded updates will install overnight, but only if the iPad is charging and connecting to a network Wi-Fi. However, you will receive a notification before the update procedure starts.
Please note that there is no provision for loss of data or settings through upgrade. In fact, at the end of the update installation, you will get an iPad with the same applications, the same configuration and the same data as before.
How to update iPad with iTunes
If you prefer to update your iPad from your PC, use iTunes, the first fundamental step you should take is to connect the tablet to the PC using cable supplied and hope that iTunes get started on your own (if this doesn't happen, start it yourself). If it is the first time you connect your tablet to your PC, authorize the operation by clicking the button allow both on PC and Mac and iPad (in the latter case, type the unlock code of the device).
Once the iTunes window appears on the screen, click tablet icon located in the upper left and press the button Search for updates (located on the right). Later, if there is an iOS update available for your iPad, you will be informed and, in order to install it, you will not have to do anything but accept it by selecting the option Download and update in response to the question that will be asked on the PC screen.
If instead you prefer to continue the installation later, click the button Just download. When the download is complete (it can take several tens of minutes, depending on the weight of the download and the speed of the connection in use), you can choose when to start installing the update.
Once the iOS installation procedure has started on your iPad, the device will automatically reboot and you will have to wait for the operation to complete (usually fifteen minutes is enough) to start using it as usual.
Once the installation is complete, you will see a warning on the screen. At that point, you will need to unlock the iPad by typing the relative bar code And, only in the case of major updates, follow the short initial setup wizard that is proposed.
I would like to point out that the iPad update does not include loss of data or settings. At the end of the process, in fact, you get an iPad with the updated version of iOS but with the same applications, the same settings and the same data as before. This applies to both minor updates and major updates.
