How to speed up Internet on your mobile phone

How to speed up Internet on your mobile phone.  Does web browsing from your mobile phone seem quite slow both on a data network and over Wi-Fi?

Unfortunately, miracles cannot be done, but with a few small tricks you can improve the loading times of Internet pages.

Among the various precautions that can be followed to try to speed up web browsing on mobile phones are those related to using fast DNS servers, checking for any active VPNs, and using alternative browsers that can load more Internet pages. Quick.

If these measures do not improve, even a little, the situation, it is advisable to check the network coverage to ensure that the slowdowns did not originate from a poor signal or, in any case, too weak.

How to speed up the Internet on your mobile phone: solutions

Change DNS servers

Let's start this guide on how to speed up the Internet on your mobile phone talking about a topic that I have already covered extensively in my blog:  DNS server.

If you haven't heard yet, DNS servers are those "translators" that allow you to visit websites via text addresses that we can all remember without too much trouble (eg. ..Item) rather than very long numerical addresses, which would in fact be the actual "coordinates" to reach them.

Therefore, one of the main moves you can make to speed up web browsing from your mobile phone is change DNS that the phone normally uses to reach Internet sites, replacing them with faster servers.

Android

If you use a mobile phone Android, you can change the DNS servers used by the phone when connected to a Red Level Wireless going to Settings> Wi-Fi> Change network> Show advanced options, then selecting the option Static IP of menu IP settings, then choose the IP address to be used on the device (eg. 192.168.1.12 ) and entering the address of the entry, that is, the router in use (eg. 192.168.1.1 ).

Once this is done, scroll down the screen, select the option static of menu IP settings, scroll down the screen again and configure the DNS servers you want to use by typing the respective addresses in the fields DNS 1 y DNS 2 and then press the button Save / Apply for save changes made.

The DNS servers that I recommend you use, as they are faster and can avoid some regional restrictions, are as follows.

  • DNS of Google - Main address 8.8.8.8 ; secondary address 8.8.4.4.
  • OpenDNS - Main address 208.67.222.222secondary direction 208.67.220.220.
  • CloudFlare - Main address 1.1.1.1 ; secondary address 1.0.0.1.

If you want to change the DNS servers used when browsing 3G / 4G instead, you must necessarily turn to third-party solutions.

Among the best, I point to Cloudflare 1.1.1.1, which allows you to use Cloudflare's DNS servers on a data network by installing a special VPN profile (which, however, does not allow you to use other VPN services at the same time) . Works with disarming simplicity - download the app from Play Store, run it, scroll to the first splash screen and press the buttons Install VPN Profile y to accept (twice in a row). Put in O N the application lever and you're done.

Some mobile phones may block the execution of the application due to power saving problems. To prevent this from happening, go to the menu to manage power saving (eg. Settings> Advanced settings> Protected apps ) and add 1.1.1.1 to "protected applications".

If you do not want to use Cloudflare's DNS servers, you can use alternative solutions, for example DNS override, which, however, requires root permissions to function properly. For more information on the use of these types of solutions, take a look at the in-depth analysis where I explain in detail how change DNS on Android.

note: word names and menus may vary slightly from one Android device to another, depending on the version of the operating system installed and the make / model of mobile phone in use. However, the steps to follow are basically those that I indicated a moment ago.

iPhone

Even in iPhone you can change the DNS servers of the WiFi connection. To do this, you must go to the adjustments de iOS (pressing the gray icon that represents some Gear  on the device home screen), select the item Wi-Fi from the menu that opens press the button (S) located next to the network name to which you are connected, press the item DNS setup located in the section DNS, mark the item manual, Press the button (+) Add server, provide the DNS server address you want to use and press Save.

The DNS servers that I recommend to use are the following.

  • Google DNS - Main address 8.8.8.8 ; secondary address 8.8.4.4.
  • OpenDNS - Main address 208.67.222.222secondary direction 208.67.220.220.
  • CloudFlare - Main address 1.1.1.1 ; secondary address 1.0.0.1.

As you can easily guess, the procedure just illustrated allows you to change the DNS of the Wi-Fi connection, but not the DNS of the Wi-Fi connection. 3G / 4G connection.

To configure DNS for the data network as well, you need to install applications such as the Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 mentioned above, which installs a VPN profile to transmit all address "translation" requests to Cloudflare's DNS servers.

Its operation is very simple: just download it from the App Store, start it, skip the initial presentation, put ON the lever in the center of the screen, press allow and write the unlock code from your device. That is all!

Verify working VPN

Verify working VPN It is another trick that can be useful to speed up your internet connection.

Why?

The answer is simple: In general, VPNs, when used, significantly increase the delay in data transmission of Internet connections from a fixed location, making the page load speed slower.

To make sure there are no active VPNs on your phone, do the following.

  • On Android - go to the application adjustments, press the item more located in the section networks, play the voice VPN and make sure there are no active VPNs under the heading VPN / VPN in use. Otherwise, press VPN name and touches disconnect from the menu that opens.
  • On iPhone - Go to application adjustments (the gray icon with the Gear located on the home screen), make sure the switch for the item VPN moves up OFF and if not, move it yourself.

Use a fast browser

Another way to increase the performance of Android and iPhone in terms of Internet browsing is use an alternative browser to the one installed "standard" on the mobile phone.

In this regard, I want to inform you of Opera Mini which, as its official description says, uses a technology in the cloud that compresses the data up to 90% before sending it, thus accelerating the loading of web pages (in 3G, especially).

Its user interface is very simple to use and it also includes other interesting functions, such as the synchronization of data on multiple devices, simplified navigation with tabs and more.

Of course, you don't always expect surprising results, but in many circumstances it actually helps load pages faster than other browsers.

Opera Mini is available for both Android and iPhone (Although in the latter case, there are no significant improvements, since on Apple devices all browsers are forced to use the Safari search engine, the "standard" browser built into iOS).

Verify network coverage

If, after following the advice I have given you in the previous lines, you continue to have problems browsing the Internet, perhaps the "culprit" could be your operator.

For this reason, I suggest that Check network coverage.

I hope you found this tutorial helpful on speeding up the Internet on your mobile phone.
